Hair Extension Glossary

360 Frontal

A 360 frontal covers the full perimeter of the head. Because the frontal does the majority of the work, the installation time is shortened in half. The style is finished once the tracks are sewn to the middle. The 360 frontal is sewn down on all sides except for the edges. Use adhesive glue to keep the frontal from slipping back.

Beaded Weft

This is a weft that has micro-loop beads attached to the track.

Bonds

The bond is the site where the extension is attached to the natural hair.

Bundles

In the hair industry, a bundle is a term that describes how wefts are purchased. When buying hair, it usually comes in a plastic packet with the hair held in place, or the weft will be rolled up with a ribbon around it to resemble a bundle of hair.

Bonding Glue

You'll need bonding glue when you’re gluing tracks to the scalp or cap. The glue is applied along the track’s seam and pressed onto the head for about five to six seconds before being removed.

Bond Protective Shield

The bond protective shield is a product used when a quick weave is being done and protects your hair from any glue damage.

Clip-In Hair Extensions

Clip-in extensions are a type of temporary hair extension that can be applied quickly for special occasions. Clip-in extensions can be as small as one inch wide or as large as a weft with 3-5 clips. They’re a less expensive option because they’re usually made of low-quality human or synthetic hair. Clip-ins are more difficult to maintain because they cannot be styled as part of your natural hair and must be washed and dried separately. If your hair is too fine, you should avoid them; the clips should be barely visible.

Closure

When doing a weave, a closure is a hairpiece that is placed on top of the hair. Sewn into place, the hair is sewn onto a lace material. You can only part it in one section because it’s a small hairpiece.

Double Drawn

The thickness or thinness of the weft is determined by double-drawn hair. From the seam to the ends, a double-drawn weft is thick. This is the most popular weft. Your style will also be more full with double-drawn hair.

Frontal

A frontal is a large, ear-to-ear area of lace used to mimic an entire hairline.

Full Weave

When you have a full weave, all of your hair is covered in extensions, and none of your natural hair is visible. Most people have their hair braided, and the hair they use is sewn in all the way through the braid. People who want to wear their hair in a protective style usually opt for a full weave because their hair is covered and will be able to grow underneath.

Fusion Hair Extensions

Fusion hair extensions are a method of bonding extensions to natural hair using a square-shaped tip that holds individual hairs together. A hot or cold melting connector softens the bond between the hairpiece and the real hair. The hairstylist would then mold it into place by rubbing their fingertips around it.

Hair Density

Hair density refers to the thickness of a person’s hair. The hair density you choose is largely a matter of personal preference and what looks best on you. Most women look natural with light to medium or medium density; however, your choice will be determined by your personal styling preferences and profile.

Hair Cuticle

The hair cuticle consists of overlapped cells that help eliminate tangling when kept aligned and intact.

Halo Extensions

Halo extensions are human hair attached to wire that rests around the crown of a head.

Hand-Tied Wefts

Another way a weft can be made is by hand-tying it. This would be your best bet if you wanted to go for a more natural look. It is applied to the scalp more closely than a machine weft. Because this method is done by hand, it can be quite costly. Instead of a long seam, the hand-tied weft is cut into sections. If the seam needs to be cut, the weft must be kept in place by sealing it afterward.

Human hair is the best natural material used to make extensions and wigs.

Lace Frontal Wig

A lace frontal wig is a wig with lace around the crown area. This style of wig appears to have a very natural hairline. The lace is usually cut and perfected so that it fits comfortably around your head.

Micro Links

Micro Loop or Micro Bead hair extensions are other names for the same thing. Micro Links are small beads that are attached to the hair shaft with a clamp. The inside of the bead has screw-like grooves that grip the hair. Your natural hair may be harmed as a result of this. Some micro-links are made of metal, which is particularly harmful to natural hair. When a blow dryer or hair straightener is used to heat the metal rings, the metal amplifies the heat on the hair inside, causing breakage.

Non-Remy Hair

Non-Remy hair’s roots and ends are all mixed up. As a result, the cuticle of the hair faces in opposite directions. Tangling is a problem with non-Remy hair because the cuticles catch on each other. This hair is frequently collected from brushes, dustbins, and hair salon floors, among other places.

Partial Weave

When you have a partial weave, about half of your hair is exposed, and the rest is a weave. This is a popular style when you want to add more volume or length to your hair. Your natural hair is braided like the full weave, but only on the top of your head.

Pre-bonded Hair Extensions

Fusion hair extensions are also known as I-tip, utip, and vtip. This is a catch-all term for hair extensions that come pre-tipped with a variety of adhesives, including keratin, glue, plant-based, and petroleum-based adhesives. A softening machine is used to soften the bond if it has been pre-bonded. A “glue gun” is used in non-pre bonded methods.

Raw Hair

100% Human hair with the cuticle intact and aligned. This term can refer to a change in color or texture or both.

Remy Hair

Remy hair is made up of cuticles that are all intact and run in the same direction. Because the cuticles are intact, this hair is of the highest quality and will last for a long time. Tangle-free remy hair is also available.

Shake and Go

A shake-and-go is a cheap synthetic wig that has an ‘instant style’ that you can wear in minutes.

Single Drawn Hair

The thickness or thinness of the weft is determined by the single drawn. It has thicker hair at the roots that thin out as it progresses to the ends. This option gives the hair’s ends a more natural appearance.

Synthetic Hair

Synthetic hair strands are made of spun acrylic fibers on high heat to mimic the look of of human hair.

Tape-In Extensions

The “sandwich” method is another name for tape extensions. These extensions are taped between your hairs and are pre-taped. It doesn’t call for any chemicals or tools and can last for months.

U-Part Wig

A U-part wig has a U-shaped opening on the top that fits into a U-shaped braided area, allowing you to choose between a leave-out or a closure. When compared to a traditional wig, it’s a more versatile look.

Virgin Hair

Human hair that has not been processed is known as virgin hair. That means dyes, perms, bleaches, or harsh washes haven’t altered it. A single donor also provides virgin hair. Virgin hair is what you need if you want to color or bleach your hair yourself.

Weft

A weft is when a thread is intricately sewn around bulk hair to create a bundle of hair.
